MMFact simplifies comparing multimodal misinformation detectors
MMFact: Simplifying Multimodal Misinformation Detection with Shared Resources and Tools
Multimedia
Summary
Detecting false information that combines text and images is tricky because researchers use many different tools and data preparations, making comparisons hard. The authors created MMFact, a shared set of tools and resources that collects many detector methods, datasets, and prepared materials like text features and image descriptions. This lets different detection methods use the same starting materials, making comparisons fairer and easier. MMFact also provides a modular system for training and testing detectors while keeping their unique designs intact. This helps researchers focus on building better ways to spot misinformation.
What this means in practice
- •For social media platform teams: Use standardized tools and data to fairly evaluate and improve systems that detect false information mixing images and text.
- •For content moderation developers: Incorporate shared resources and evaluation frameworks to speed up implementing and testing multimodal misinformation detection techniques.

Abstract
Multimodal misinformation detection methods often rely on different preprocessing pipelines and auxiliary resources, making experimental comparisons difficult to interpret. We present MMFact, a collection of shared resources and tools that simplifies this research workflow. It brings together 47 detector implementations and baselines, three multimodal datasets, and prepared materials ranging from semantic features to OCR, image descriptions, and external evidence. Compatible methods can use the same materials, reducing variation introduced by preprocessing and supporting fairer comparisons. A modular training and evaluation framework preserves method-specific designs while providing common experimental procedures. By treating prepared materials as a shared research resource, MMFact helps researchers focus on developing and evaluating detection methods.
