Dynamic microsegmentation improves security in multi-robot networks
Implementation of Dynamic Microsegmentation for a Multi-Robot Network
Multiagent SystemsNetworking and Internet ArchitectureRobotics
Summary
Networks of robots need protection from threats that could disrupt their work or spread to other robots. This paper shows how dynamic microsegmentation, a fine-grained way to divide the network into small parts that can change based on robot condition and function, can isolate threats automatically in real time. The authors used commercial software to create and test this system in a lab with multiple robots. Their approach protected the network from attacks while keeping unaffected robots working normally.
What this means in practice
- •For iot network operators: Automatically isolate compromised robots in a multi-robot IoT network while maintaining normal operations elsewhere.
- •For industrial automation teams: Implement real-time segmented security policies that adapt to the function and health of robotic assets to reduce downtime during attacks.

Abstract
This report describes a laboratory instantiation of a dynamic microsegmentation function for an Internet-of-Things network, specifically a multi-robot network, using a commercial software-defined microsegmentation tool. Fine-grained dynamic segmentation policies are defined, where segments are adapted based on asset functional and health tags. Automated implementation of the dynamic policies in software is also undertaken. The microsegmentation solution is shown to automatically isolate an indicated threat in real time, while maintaining unaffected operations. The demonstration indicates that microsegmentation can be implemented in IoT networks, in a way that allows for robust operation in the face of threats and disruptions.
