Mixed reality system improves drumming learning with real time feedback
DruMR: A Feedback Driven Mixed Reality Air Drumming System
Human-Computer Interaction
Summary
Learning to play drums can be hard without a drum set. The authors created DruMR, a system that lets you air drum in virtual reality using special hardware and a VR headset. It gives you detailed feedback so you can learn better than some existing virtual drumming tools. They plan to add AI insights and more helpful visuals to make practicing even easier.
What this means in practice
- •For drum instructors: Provide students with a virtual drumming platform that delivers precise feedback to improve practice effectiveness without physical drum sets.
- •For virtual reality developers: Develop immersive mixed reality music training apps that integrate motion hardware and AI-guided feedback systems.

Abstract
This paper introduces DruMR, a mixed reality (MR) drumming system designed to make learning drums more accessible, responsive, and feedback-driven. By combining Aerodrums hardware with the Meta Quest 3 headset, DruMR allows users to drum in a virtual environment without a physical drum set. Unlike existing VR drumming applications, DruMR emphasizes instructional value through quantitative feedback and future integration of AI-generated insights, refined quantitative and qualitative visualizations, reactive environment modes and more. Overall, this paper reviews the current state of the DruMR system, related works that influenced the systems development, planned user study comparing physical and virtual training, and future work to be added to the system.
