AI improves disaster response and tracks displacement worldwide
AI-Driven Disaster Response and Displacement Monitoring
Artificial IntelligenceComputer Vision and Pattern Recognition
Summary
Disasters and conflicts cause damage and force many people to move, but it's hard to quickly understand the extent of the damage or where people go. The authors describe how artificial intelligence (AI) helps by analyzing satellite images and other data to spot damage and track where displaced people are. This makes disaster response faster and more accurate. It also helps with related issues like climate change and poverty by using AI to predict problems and monitor changes.
What this means in practice
- •For disaster response teams: Speed up assessment of disaster damage and urgent needs using AI analysis of satellite and socioeconomic data.
- •For renewable energy planners: Inform renewable energy design and control by integrating AI with climate and environmental data monitoring.
A survey. It maps existing work.

Abstract
ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI) has demonstrated its potential across a wide range of humanitarian tasks, offering scalable and data-driven solutions to some of the world's most pressing challenges. For instance, in addressing climate change, AI-powered models are being used for faster and more accurate global weather forecasting, control and design of renewable energy, and monitoring deforestation. Machine learning algorithms analyze satellite imagery and socioeconomic data to predict poverty and promote sustainable development. AI has also transformed disaster response and conflict monitoring, providing innovative solutions for assessing damage and urgent needs and tracking displacement.
