HiFiPix improves real-world image super-resolution with high-detail pixel restoration

HiFiPix: Bringing High-Fidelity Real-World Super-Resolution Back to Pixel Space

Abstract: Diffusion-based real-world image super-resolution suffers from limited reconstruction fidelity due to information loss in VAE-based latent representations. Recently, pixel-space diffusion models offer a promising high-faithfulness alternative by avoiding latent compression, but adapting them to Real-ISR remains challenging due to inherent patch boundary artifacts and degraded generative capability. To address the issues and maximize the potential of pretrained pixel-space diffusion models, we propose HiFiPix, a pixel-space Real-ISR framework capable of ultra high-fidelity reconstruction and fine-grained visual generation effects. To suppress patch boundary artifacts, we penalize unrealistic high-frequency periodic components with a Cross-Scale Wavelet Discriminator (CWSD) for image-level supervision, and Mixup Contrastive Self-Distillation (MixCSD) for intermediate representation regularization. Furthermore, we uncover a heterogeneous generation-fidelity trade-off across low-rank adapters (LoRA) and propose Selective LoRA Pruning (LoRA-SP) to adaptively prune LoRA layers, enhancing generative capability with minimal deterioration of reconstruction fidelity. Extensive experiments demonstrate that HiFiPix consistently outperforms existing state-of-the-art latent space methods in terms of both restoration accuracy and perceptual quality by a large margin. Code and models will be released.

The gist
Making blurry or low-resolution photos clearer is a common challenge. The authors found that popular methods that compress images internally lose important details. They created HiFiPix, a system that works directly with the full image to better keep fine details and avoid artifacts. By using special tools to prevent patchy edges and carefully tuning parts of the system, HiFiPix restores images more accurately and beautifully. Their tests show it works better than earlier approaches at both accuracy and visual quality.

OmniXRef enables video editing with text image and video references

OmniXRef: A Unified Framework for Multimodal Multi-Reference Video Editing

Abstract: Creative intent in video editing can be expressed through text instructions (e.g., "remove the people"), image references (e.g., subject appearance), video references (e.g., camera movement), or a combination of the above. We introduce OmniXRef, a unified framework for multimodal multi-reference video editing that allows users to combine variable numbers of text, image, and video references to control diverse attributes of a source video. We first devise a unified input design with a reference-bank interface and introduce $R^2$-RoPE to support generalization to more references. Then our model, OmniXRef-Model, uses a single-stream diffusion transformer to jointly process the source video and multimodal context from an MLLM in an interleaved sequence. To address the scarcity of training data for video-reference editing, we construct OmniXRef-Data using synthesis pipelines for different editing tasks and combinations of references. We use curriculum learning to progressively increase task complexity and resolution. To support systematic evaluation of video as a control modality, we introduce OmniXRef-Bench, a benchmark for video-reference attribute transfer across Camera, Motion, Content, Style, and Visual Effects (VFX). Comprehensive evaluations show that our OmniXRef-Model outperforms task-specific baselines and commercial models.

Video editing often involves giving instructions using text, images, or videos to change how a video looks or moves. The authors created OmniXRef, a system that lets users combine all these types of instructions together to edit videos in flexible ways. They built tools to handle many references at once and trained their model with specially made data to handle complex edits. Tests show this approach works better than others focused on single types of edits.

New method distills high quality images with less compute

Data-free Multistep Diffusion Distillation

Abstract: One-step diffusion distillation achieves strong performance on small datasets but remains insufficient for high-resolution or complex text-to-image settings. Extending to multistep distillation often requires training data, suffers from early-step degradation, inconsistent outputs across sampling budgets, and incurs high computational cost. We identify that these limitations stem from simultaneous training, where a single adapted network approximates multiple score functions of different student distributions at once, causing biased distribution matching and unstable optimization. Therefore, we propose Progressive Multistep Data-free Distillation (PMDD), which assigns a dedicated adapted network per student distribution while avoiding the memory overhead of maintaining multiple adapted networks. Combined with a stage-wise unforget loss to preserve earlier-step generations, PMDD reduces optimization bias in the student, provides faster convergence, and a single unified model that supports multiple inference budgets. Extensive experiments show that PMDD matches or outperforms data-free few-step baselines at every multistep budget, reaches FID 1.99 on ImageNet 64x64 in two steps, below its 512-NFE teacher (2.32), and achieves FID 7.76 on zero-shot COCO 512x512, while requiring 4-5x less training compute than data-free DMDv2 to support three inference budgets.

Creating detailed images from text prompts with AI models can be slow and needs lots of data. The authors found that common ways to speed up this process face problems like unstable training and inconsistent results. They developed a new step-by-step training method called PMDD that uses less data and memory but still produces high-quality images quickly. This approach supports generating images with different amounts of computation while keeping the results reliable and clear.

Scribble only image editing models struggle to capture user intent

ScribbleEdit: A Benchmark for Scribble-Only Image Editing

Abstract: Scribble-based interaction provides a lightweight and intuitive way for users to specify image editing intents in interactive editing tools. However, current image editing models based on VLMs or LLMs struggle to understand and execute edits based solely on scribble inputs. To systematically study this problem, we construct a new benchmark, ScribbleEdit, that evaluates the ability of image editing models to perform image editing conditioned on scribbles. This task requires both a deep understanding of the intention of the scribble and an accurate interpretation of its spatial information. In ScribbleEdit, we design an automated data construction pipeline and introduce a dedicated evaluation protocol that explicitly measures intention alignment. Our analysis reveals that existing VLM/LLM-based editing models fail to accurately capture scribble intentions. To guide future progress on scribble-only image editing, we propose a simple yet effective soft-token baseline, which enhances the model's understanding of scribble semantics and outperforms standard image editing models on our benchmark. Our evaluation and baseline together provide a concrete foundation for assessing and improving the scribble-driven image editing.

Using scribbles to tell a computer how to edit a picture is simple for people but hard for current AI models. The authors created a new test to see how well models understand these scribbles and follow the user's wishes. They found that current AI models don’t do a good job interpreting scribbles. To help improve this, they built a new method that better understands what scribbles mean. This work helps make editing tools that users can control easily with simple marks.
